Lemar at IndigO2

Lemar at IndigO2 | Live review

On his tour to celebrate ten years in the music business, Lemar returned to his hometown to perform in front of his die-hard fans at the IndigO2. The R‘n’B singer was particularly grateful for all his accomplishments and repeatedly thanked his audience for supporting him throughout his career, as he poured his heart into every song.

Lemar, accompanied by his band, played 16 tracks in total, alternating between old hits and material from his new album Invincible. He showed off his vocal talent, ranging from low-pitched, vibrant notes to very high notes and not hitting a single wrong one. The artist also demonstrated his ability to explore different genres of music, delivering an interesting mash-up between All I Ever Do (My Boo), a track from his first album Dedicated, and an acoustic adaptation of I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness, and a funky version of Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5.

The concert was a good mix of upbeat, joyous tunes like The First Time, groove-laden songs such as Merry Go Round and ballads like Someone Should Tell You, dedicated to all the lovers at the venue, some of whom had previously asked Lemar to sing the track.

The singer put on a good show, but his fans didn’t seem particularly inspired by the gig; the majority of the audience spent their time dancing timidly or waving their hands every now and then, which gave the impression that they only moderately enjoyed the performance.

Only a few moments of enthusiasm for the more famous songs, with hand-clapping and singing along to the choruses, can’t make up for the whole night, though the nature of Lemar’s repertoire (attracting fans of easy listening and addressing the universal yet well-established topic of falling in and out of love)  may have accounted for the chilled-out atmosphere. However, the lack of edge in Lemar’s lyrics and overall performance were not enough to excite the crowd, who seemed almost bored by the event.
