The Asia Fashion Collection catwalk show report for NYFW A/W 2015
The Asia Fashion Collection show at the Salon at Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week allowed for promising young Asian designers to display their designs. The designers ranged from various areas of Asia including Tokyo, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The show included the collections of TSUBASA SHINYO, ZOKUZOKUB, Old honey, Noirer, Athena Chuang and Nelson Blackle.
The show started with ZOKUZOKUB, designed by Takuma Hoshi. When explaining the concept of his brand, Hoshi translated what ZOKUZOKU means as a feeling of thrill in Japanese, while Bi means beauty. Vivid patterns and vibrant colors were present in all pieces of Hoshi’s line. Models wore oversized quilted coats paired with matching skirts or pants paired with silver platform sandals and socks. Using white as a base, Hoshi combined purples, reds, blues, pinks and greens in unique symmetric graphics in all pieces.
Noirer by Lee Younggon focuses on the intricacy of perfect layers and drapes. The use of just black and white does not limit the design but rather allows for the pieces to stand out more. Younggon styled models in long military-like coats with silver belted buckles. Black leather boots complimented the loose-fitting trousers. Younggon’s shearling leather jacket was sculpted to perfection including caped sleeves, which helped epitomize the intricacy yet simplicity of his brand.
Athena Chuang designed by Athena Chuang told a story of femininity with the help of various shades of greens. The collection included a white chiffon blouse paired with green and black printed shorts along with a silk olive green jumpsuit with mesh inserts near the shoulders and a black belt around the waist.
Yellow Submarine from The Beatles’ album Revolver may have been playing as the models walked down the runway but there may have been some inspiration from the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with the immense amount of color used in Nelson Blackle. Designed by Nelson Leung, Nelson Blackle displayed an array of bright primary colors, often all together or combined with more monotone selections. Leung paired a bright red jacket with an electric blue graphic shirt. Another model wore a striped orange shirt with a pair of grey shorts and long grey jacket. Leung’s line played with vivid colors on plaid jackets and square-patterned sweaters.
Old Honey design partners Marina Hara and Yu Suzuki used playful patterns, layers and asymmetric cuts in their line. Tribal-like prints using gold, blue, green and other colors were seen in a majority of the collection, including a two-piece pantsuit paired with a long sleeve crop top. The same print was noted in a long sleeve dress with a high-waisted, big skirt. Hara and Suzuki also included a black dress with a peculiar asymmetric cut towards the mid-length of the dress.
Tsubasa Shinyo’s collection made statements with graphic prints, pretty pinks and text. Models wore black laced boots as they bared their legs in t-shirt dresses with collage-like designs in colors like navy blue and pink.
All of these collections show that the youth are the future. These designers developed their lines based on their drive and creativity. The looks they’ve designed are sure to be worn by everyone in this upcoming autumn and winter season.
