Correll Correll: Award winning label, one to watch this year
Twin sisters Daphne and Vera Correll have started 2012 on a major high. Their label, Correll Correll, was one of four womenswear designers presented with the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award earlier this year.
Along with the prestigious prize comes a grant of $25,000 to help them on their way to show their collection at New York Fashion Week. The Italian winemaker Ecco Domani, sponsor of the Fashion Foundation award now in its eleventh year, has launched the careers of many a designer, including some of fashion’s finest: Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Zac Posen, Rag & Bone and many others.
It is a huge achievement for the German-born sisters, who only launched their line of handmade knitwear in Berlin in 2006. Since then, they have maintained their intimate approach to design, making each of their custom pieces by hand in small quantities. Masters of their craft, they define their work with hand stitching, knitting, dyeing and weaving, using only natural fibres and textiles.
Correll Correll’s designs are not influenced by fashion; rather the brand embodies an ethos of care and quality. Their creation process echoes the past, a time of skilled artists and well before mass production. Today, every single item is made with meticulous care in their Brooklyn studio – that much is obvious when you look at the intricate detail of each piece.
So who do the designers think will wear Correll Correll? In an interview, Daphne Correll has said: ‘We think the clothes would appeal to anyone who has an interest in wearing things that are not mass produced but made by hand and with care.’ In an age of fast fashion and another person wearing the same dress at every corner, the thought definitely does appeal.
It seems to me that Correll Correll’s clothes encompass four ideas – organic, comfortable, hand-made and unique.
These two ladies are definitely ones to keep an eye on this year!
