Five senses: Fascinating jewellery by Simona Kaunaite

Five senses: Fascinating jewellery by Simona Kaunaite

I have been craving for a fascinating approach to jewellery since I can remember and finally I think I have found the answer. Born and bred Lithuanian Simona Kaunaite is a ceramic jewellery designer and illustrator currently based in London.

Her work is beyond words. The idea behind her creations is forms, shapes and objects that reflect aspects of life. Through her breakdown of accessories and the questioning of what their purpose really is, she has been able to signify components of our everyday life through a series of unusual yet mesmerising collections.

One of her first collections, Five Senses focuses on a nose, an eye, an ear and a finger, they are made from porcelain and can be worn as brooches. An interesting nose necklace forms the rest of this collection.

Representative of the five senses, Simona has created a whole new idea for the purpose of jewellery; demonstrating that body parts are beautiful, not just the gold and silver we wear on our bodies.

The pieces are slightly daunting and somewhat scary with their realism at first, but after you admire their beauty, you learn to discover this really is a distinctive and stimulating collection.

The idea behind her creations asks simple questions, which create thought provoking answers. The design of her pieces ask questions about beauty, which you would say is the reason we all wear necklaces, earrings and other trinkets. Somehow, beauty is portrayed in her work through a deeper meaning. One thing that can be said is that no matter who looks, wears or simply critiques Simona’s work, you’ll never forget what she has made.
