An interview with fashion designer Zakary le Stele
When Zakary le Stele got in touch with us about the new AW12 collection we jumped at the chance to find out what it’s all about. After founding his label in 2010, Zakary le Stele has made a flawless entry into the fashion industry and we couldn’t wait to find out all about the journey so far.
Who is Zakary Le Stele?
Well, I come from an art and fashion background. However, I’ve worked in fashion for quite some time. Originally I started as a stylist but I gradually worked into design, this had always been my aim.
Tell us more about the label?
Originally, the label was founded with the aim of plundering inspiration from atypical, sometimes neglected sources in order to create pieces that were both visually and mentally compelling. Because of my art background, prints generally play a major role, as a means of conveying both the concepts and moods of a given collection. The prevailing aesthetic is one of colour, femininity, and self-expression.
What made you branch into the world of womenswear?
I started out as just an accessory label – It had always been my intention to move to womenswear as well. To truly fulfill my vision, it was essential to incorporate it into the label.
We absolutely love your new look-book. What is the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection about?
The latest collection is entitled “L’Ardeur”. The title refers to an exigent and avaricious desire. The collection is an exploration of the fervid emotions which such a desire may cause in an individual, as well as the profound effects that emotive responses may have on the psyche.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
There is a myriad of sources for my inspiration. I like to choose subject matters that challenge me, subjects that are considered difficult to express through fashion; this makes the process more fulfilling and the results more intriguing.
What made you first start out as a fashion designer?
There was no beginning. For me, fashion is eternal. It has been the singular constant in my life.
What would you say is the key item for any girl’s wardrobe this season?
Prints are huge right now and are a key facet of the Zakary le Stele aesthetic. So, a printed blouse: it’s an item to build an outfit around and dependent on the versatility of the cut can be worn both day and night.
What are your favourite things to do with your spare time?
I like to create and I like to learn. Recently I’ve been obsessed with photography.
Have you got any advice for anyone trying to break into the fashion industry?
Stay focused. Network. Be positive.
Finally, what is lined up in the future for Zakary le Stele?
I’m actually currently working on a shoe line that I’m hoping to launch as part of the SS13 collection. Shoes are an area which excites me; there is such a broad range of possibilities in footwear. There are some amazing footwear designers out there today, but I hope to add something original to the market.
