Natasha Law: Dust in Their Eyes at Eleven
Seductive feminine figures occupy Dust in Their Eyes, a graceful series of paintings by Natasha Law, the older sister of the actor Jude Law, which is currently presented at Eleven Gallery in London, Belgravia.
Law’s identifiable simplified and figurative style consists of flat surfaces of almost uninterrupted colours that define the shapes of the female figures. The details on her cohesive canvases are sporadically defined with a darker contour. The shiny, thick, almost liquid-like surface of her paintings is achieved by careful application of household gloss paint in dustless setting. The painter occasionally treats the paint in sculptural terms and instead of defining the image with colours, she differentiates the surface of paint by imprinting indentations on the glossy, heavy surfaces or leaves slivers of the raw aluminium sheet exposed. The constant repetition of the same range of familiar techniques makes her ornamental, decorative works highly recognisable.
Her latest series Dust in Their Eyes is no exception. On the body of her newest, most subtle works, Law suspends her models in slight performances of removing clothing or exhaling smoke. Together, the individual pieces create a subtle and elusive narrative. Most focused visitors may feel included in a private universe, which opens in a sequence of movements presented by detached, anonymous figures on different bits of her work.
Natasha Law (born 1970), lives and works in London. She recently exhibited in London, Tokyo and Mumbai. Her work also comprises acting, illustrating and being a mentor and judge in the Fresh Talent initiative.
