NYFW – NOT by Jenny Lai S/S 2013 presentation
Unlike her debut S/S 12 collection Portrait by Sheet, Jenny Lai’s 2013 presentation featured women’s clothing that was full of sheer teases, surprise open panels and skin-revealing cut outs. Appropriately named Porous, this airy collection displays femininity yet bravado: its vibrant palette of azalea pink, magenta and lilac both collides with and compliments a peek-a-boo aesthetic, asserting boldness yet introversion.
It’s a dichotomy that reflects Lai’s personality: “I am naturally a very introspective person, content with being alone and playing with ideas within my own head. However, throughout my childhood, I did explore all kinds of performing arts.”
Lai’s duality of theatric-introspection is apparent in an item of pants with sheer sides – an obvious tease of skin in an otherwise conservative outfit, at once traditional and unconventional.
The influence of her post-graduate internship with Viktor and Rolf is evident in her concept-presentation of Porous at the Highline Loft in New York, where models patrolled a stage accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack. Lai’s skill for ambience and flair for tailoring combine to weave a visual narrative between apparel and the female form; her statement pieces suited for women who aim to impact without saying a word.
