NYFW – RAD by Rad Hourani S/S 2013 unisex collection
Solid colours and straight lines once again dominated Rad Hourani’s vision for the upcoming year. Under his eponymous label that specifically creates unisex clothing, Hourani used mostly black, dark plum, silver, and peach colours. His clothes are typically said to resemble the folds of an origami and for those who have come to appreciate this aesthetic will not be disappointed. The models were groomed to further play on the androgyny of the RAD line with sleek, pulled back hair and minimal make-up. Although he offers leggings for both male and female, his collection is not particularly masculine or feminine.
For the past five years, he has been successful at presenting his personal vision for fashion. “I started imagining clothes the same way I started creating images: with a sense of curiosity and innocence driven by my no-background. No school. No teachers. No Telly. No boundaries. No formatting. I like the idea of a world that we could live and shape by ourselves. Only by observing.” In order to remain true to his image, he finds consistency and balance with strict silhouettes. Even without the flamboyance of other designers, he is an upcoming designer to reckon with, because he plays by his own rules, yet of course there are no rules. In a society where everything is categorised and labelled, Rad has carved out his own niche within the fashion world and is recognised for his revolutionary vision to create universal genderless clothing.
