NYFW – Mandy Coon S/S 2013 collection
It is no surprise Many Coon opened her S/S 2013 show with the newest version of her best selling item to date: The Ginny bunny bag. Donned by celebrities, the bunny bag is exemplary of how Coon has impressed the fashion world as the new kid on the block. In spite of the fact that the debut of her line was only two years ago, she has already demonstrated that she has the capacity for longevity in an unpredictable industry. The mix of an edgy fabric-like leather with softer fabrics exhibited a style which Vogue magazine referred to as “punk with a hint of romance”. These rocker-chic night-life looks have the power to automatically make you appear cool.
It’s hard to tell this flair for fashion is the brainchild of a former computer science student, turned model, turned DJ, turned designer. In the beginning of her career, Coon was unsure of her newfound talent, even as a skillful assistant to designer Camilla Staerk . However, Staerk saw something in Coon that she knew was bigger than being an assistant and convinced her to launch her own label. Amazingly, the confidence Coon lacks in herself, she manages to project onto her clothing line. Her designs are saturated with panache and plunging necklines. Metallic belts, tops and trouser legs were shown with small cut intricate cut outs that resembled the pulse lines in music rhythms. Regardless of her start, it’s safe to say the push from Staerk was in the right direction.
