What to wear on a first date
This is an obscure notion that most of us have considered at one point or another. Infuriatingly enough, it often depends on a) the guy and b) where you happen to be going. Despite this, you should always go for something you feel comfortable in because if you’re not, he’ll know, because it will be written all over your face.
So, scenario number one, probably the most impersonal yet oddly stereotypical first date – the cinema date. Despite it’s popularity, this as a highly odd date location, as you will be sitting in the dark for anything up to three hours and not talking or even looking at each other, so perhaps try to avoid this by suggesting something a little more engaging. We all know that for guys, a clean pair of jeans and a collared shirt will suffice… but what do you wear?
As aforementioned, comfort is the key, so always stick to your personal style and clothes that suit your shape. So, the cinema date is, above all things, casual. If you’re a jeans and jumper kind of girl, go for a slightly classier version than the usual go-to holey round-necks. Try a pair of black skinny jeans with some shoe boots and a pretty jumper with a smattering of jewellery. It oozes class, but keeps things casual and not intimidating.
If you would never go near a pair of jeans with a barge pole, go for a cotton tea dress, black tights/bare legs and dark shoes. A slight heel is nice, but remember to dress down. Ballet pumps are cute, however you should never forget the power of brogues. Don’t forget that cinemas tend to be pretty chilly at the best of times, so take a cardigan to wrap up in. Your date won’t be best pleased if he has to sacrifice his hoodie to stop you from getting hypothermia.
Next scenario – The dinner/drinks date. If he is taking you to McDonald’s or Subway, don’t worry, you don’t need an outfit, you’re not going. However, it is hard to know whether he’s a Wagamama’s/Spoons sort of guy or a Ritz/Champagne Bar kind of guy. Troubling. Only way to cope is by wearing an outfit that will fit comfortably into both locations. We suggest using a tailored blazer and heels as a starting point, combined with either a figure-flattering dress or a smart top and trousers. Tailoring is really in-season at the moment, and nearly everyone can pull the look off beautifully if worn correctly. Make sure it fits well in all the right places, and tread very carefully around shoulder pads.
Our personal favourite has to be the picnic date. You actually get a chance to get to know the guy, and you can guarantee a lot of effort has gone into that hamper rather than a wad of cash. Bare in mind you will probably be sitting on the floor, so this can be a fabulous opportunity to bring out a classic playsuit. This potentially grassy location also calls for a pair of leather ankle boots because there is absolutely nothing more infuriating than trying to get loose grass off your favourite pair of suede boots. Pick out something comfortable and cute that won’t show off possible grass stains.
Don’t forget, if a playsuit really isn’t your thing, honestly, work your own style. Nothing else will look as good, but always keep it practical. This look by Asos really brings out the pretty in the tomboy look – we love it!
Final scenario – The action date. He suggests a good old mountain hike, and already you’re sweating at the proposition. This one is tricky, because you want to look the part, but also utterly delectable. Try out a few countryside tried-and-tested old faithful: black walking boots, proper old wax Barbour, black cotton shorts, tights, chunky socks, a flannel/denim shirt with a light jumper over the top. Sorted.
When it comes to being dragged across the countryside, layers really are your friends. If he suggests something like rock climbing, or absailing – he’s brought you to a point where it would be just plain foolish to be too fashionable. Ask him what the best attire would be, then do your best to colour coordinate, chances are, this action man really couldn’t care less about fashion considering he spends his time dangling off cliffs.
At the end of the day girls, you have to rock up to these events feeling your best, and that doesn’t always mean following the trends. All you need to do is take into account where you are going and what sort of a person this man is – whether he’s into sports, money, jokes – and find what makes you feel good when you look in the mirror. The whole point of a first date is for this guy to get to know the real you, so keep calm, have a glass of wine and have a bit of fun.
