Life behind the scenes during New York Fashion week

Life behind the scenes during New York Fashion week

Fashion week projects images of glamorous, impeccably dressed people posing for pictures, and no doubt throwing back too much of that free champagne that flows at many of the after parties. While celebrities mingle in the front row, fashion bloggers tweet furiously and industry types trying to see and be seen, the people behind each show are working non-stop to put on the season’s best show. No matter what city you’re in Fashion Week is the same, it’s non-stop, super hectic, and not to mention the collections are totally amazing!

We had the chance to interview Dev R, a seasoned vet of New York Fashion Week who has worked backstage with many designers including working events for Lady Gaga’s Fame perfume launch, and the UK’s own Jenny Packham for her 2013 S/S collection. As a Casting Assistant at the Edit Desk, located in New York, she has seen her fair share of what it takes to put on a show, and what life is really like backstage.

How would you describe Jenny Packham’s style?

Classic with a modern twist. Her designs are incredible. I melted when I walked into the showroom for the first time.

Describe the process of selecting models for Jenny Packham’s show?

My boss makes an initial selection of girls that we then show Jenny’s team who will narrow it down from there.

How long does it take to put a show together?

The entire show takes months and months. The casting for the show is a few weeks.

What is life really like backstage before a show?

Absolute insanity, in a good way. When you can visualise everything coming together it gives me butterflies every time!

Best part of Fashion Week?

The energy backstage, there is nothing like it!

What do you wear backstage?

All black, keeps me looking thin, chic and somewhat put together.

Any backstage beauty tips?

In general there are a few absolutes- always carry chapstick, mobile phone charger, make-up wipes, extra pens, hair tie and a bottle of water.

With the long days, and crazy work hours what gets you through the day?

Wellness Formula from Whole Foods seriously saves lives. Its these vitamin and mineral packed pills that are literally the size of horse pills. You take them every three hours when you’re feeling under the weather. Within a day you are back to functioning at 100 per cent, which is necessary.

Any crazy backstage moments?

I wish I had some insane story of hair pulling or dresses ripping, but unfortunately I do not.

Advice for people wanting to get involved?

Make sure you know exactly what you want to do and throw yourself into it 100 per cent! You can’t half-ass it. Never give up or lose sight of who you are and your goals, because its very easy to get swept away in the glamour of it all.
