At one time, Michelle Chang considered herself to be a fine artist, interior designer and an illustrator, but she feels that jewellery is her forte: “Although I found enjoyment in doing all of those things, nothing compares to the degree of satisfaction and affinity that I feel when I make jewellery.” Making jewellery is difficult and for Michelle it allows her to incorporate all the skills and interest she has accrued. 

“To me, jewellery making is drawing, design, sculpture and craft all embodied in a tiny object that can be worn.” When you look at pieces such as the tiny ram earrings or the cut-out cuff bracelet, you can clearly see the detail. So what inspires Michelle? “I find inspiration in many things, small and large, natural and man-made, living and insert. In short, pretty much anything and everything.” That’s why there is so much variety in her jewellery. Anyone can find a piece that will be personal to them. One person might pick the baby kitten studs because they love cats, someone else might buy the baby elephant necklace because it reminds them of a gap year they went on. 

What’s important is that her jewellery is unique, but it is also made by hand. A true artist makes the pieces themselves, not through a factory. “I make jewellery as I see jewellery, as a piece of tiny art that can be worn. Jewellery is more than just adornment. I see it both as an extension of the wearer as well as a creative expression of the jewellery.”
