Ten must-see concerts in New York City this November
Comfortably cushioned between Halloween and Christmas, November is full of exciting shows in New York City. Here is our selection of the ten must-see shows:
1. Barcelona’s International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art Sonar is ready for its 8th North American tour, which stops on November 2nd in Manhattan’s Roseland Ballroom. South African’s “zef” rappers Die Antwoord are the headliners of the event, joined by Canadian electronic music artists Azari & III, Tiga and DJs Seth Troxler, Paul Kalkbrenner and Nick Fancuilli. 2. Another electronic music fest is happening in Webster Hall on November 3rd – this time on the techno/minimal side. One of world’s finest minimal-techno DJs – Richie Hawtin – is spinning along with Loco Dice and Ean Golden. Their set is part of the educational CNTRL: BEYOND EDM – ELECTRONIC & TECHNO(LOGY) BASED MUSIC Tour. The three DJs will stop by New York University (NYU) during the day to teach young electronic enthusiasts old-school DJ-ing with modern technology, digital DJ-ing and controllerism; using technology to control creativity. 3. On November 9th and 10th Williamsburg is hosting the 5th Annual Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival featuring more than 40 artists, and includes a curated food truck lot, street art, installations. Local Djs like Nicolas Jaar, Golden Panda, Benji B, Kingdom and Uproot Andy will be spinning at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl Glasslands, Cameo, Public Assembly and The villain loft. 4. Hardcore band Converge is playing at Highline Ballroom on November 11th. Regarded as one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground, Converge is sharing the stage with Torche, Kvelertak and Whips/Chains. 5. On November 29th the protopunk legends and godfathers of synthpop, techno, electroclash – Suicide are returning to their downtown Manhattan roots to play at Le Poisson Rouge. The underrated post-punk stars Bush Tetras are jamming with them, as well as R&N (rhythm and noise) band The Sediment Club. 6. The annual Tinderbox fest, taking place in Webster hall, is girl power at its best. Its mission is to showcase innovative female artists and donate 100% of the proceeds to organizations empowering women in music. The 2012 Tinderbox fest is headlined by freak folk sisters duo CocoRosie accompanied by other artists including Jean Grae, Selebrities, Hard Nips. 7. For Indie Rock lovers, seven piece indie folk/indie pop band from Iceland – Of Monsters and men is playing at Terminal 5 on November 20th. Tickets at the price of $30.30 are available through Ticketmaster. 610 West 56th Street New York, NY 10019
8. Bob Dylan is playing with his band in Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center a day later – on November 21st – as part of the tour for his new (and 35th) album Tempest. Another iconic musician – lead guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits – joins Dylan on stage for a true “night of the legends”. 9. The Who join an already-impressive inaugural roster at the Barcley Center, playing on November 14th as part of their Quadrophenia and More tour. Following the release of his memoir: Who I am, the show is an ideal opportunity to see what is hiding behind (Townsend’s) blue eyes. 10. We haven’t forgotten the country music fans who will be delighted by Green, Bourbon & Country – November 16th in Upper West Side’s Stage 72 / The Triad Theater. This southern-inspired event features wine & spirits specialist Michael Green and Kentucky-born country artist Bryan Glover. The $49 ticket includes the fine Kentucky spirits.
