Rabbit Hutch Designs – animal inspired jewellery and accessories
Rabbit Hutch Designs is a project by Alex Hutchinson, a self-confessed crafty-girl originally from London but now lives in Sydney. We asked Alex how Rabbit Hutch Designs started, she claims that she loves to sew, embroider, draw and paint. Last year Alex bit the bullet and launched Rabbit Hutch, where she started selling her handmade jewellery and accessories.
Rabbit Hutch Designs, named after her love of rabbits and her surname Hutchinson, “I thought it sounded fun”. Many of the accessories and jewellery are inspired further by Alex’s love of birds and other animals. Alex claims that an outfit just isn’t right without jewellery and she says she would wear every piece that is available to buy. The jewellery that Rabbit Hutch sell are very fun and they make you smile. There are lots of bright colours, mixed prints and anything novelty.
Alex told us that her recent move across the pond to Sydney has inspired her whilst designing, the “incredible wildlife” and “brightly coloured parakeets and cockatoos” and even meeting real life Koala Bears have influenced her designs.
The majority of accessories and jewellery available online are made from fabrics but Alex tells us moving into using wood and leather are next on the list, including wooden patchwork necklaces and leather cockatiel necklaces. The Peter Pan collars are some of the best sellers, a quick and easy way to brighten up a plain outfit. Alex claimed that her favourite item has to be the animal portrait brooches, embroidered by hand and based on drawings by herself – each one slightly different so that little personalities emerge as she sews.
Each piece is incredibly personal and Alex takes pride in the little things, such as the finish of the product: “It’s a lovely feeling wrapping up my pieces like little presents, and sending them off to someone I don’t know but who will hopefully be happy and excited to open them”.
