Take the bate: Stephanie Bates Jewellery
Let The Upcoming introduce Birmingham School of Jewellery 2010 graduate, Stephanie Bates. She is ambitious, determined and talented. In just two years this jeweller has travelled the UK and Europe, spreading the knowledge of her brand. Showcasing at multiple events such as London Jewellery Week and Barcelona Jewellery Week (2012).
Stephanie’s first collection, Bespoke, exhibited her love for precious gems and metals, as well as soft femininity that initially differentiates her two collections. However, there are still clear links between her works and the environment she connects with. There is an urban quality to her jewellery, which makes her pieces modern and relatable, but also unique. This collection illustrates her transition between graduate and fully fetched jeweller, as she relaxes into the role, and her work becomes more fun and focused. In this collection are a pair of sterling silver hoops labelled “Juice” which flow perfectly with current street and urban trends that have filtered into the high-street stores.
The current collection, Changes in State, centres on the changes in architecture. Stephanie uses her surroundings as the main influence and insight into the “destruction and development” of building which is clearly evident in this series of work. Rings shaped like outlines of buildings are covered in spray colours, ladylike wallpapers are blocked and arranged in ways that sit comfortably on the hand and look refreshingly different. This collection makes a strong stamp on Stephanie’s style and sets her apart from other current jewellers.
Stephanie Bates must have done something right, because she currently sold on Vanilla Ink’s online shop and caught our eye. Next stop is The Whitstable Jewellery Emporium on 15th to 20th November. Stephanie has also received a lot of feedback and interest in a men’s range, so keep your eyes peeled over the next few months for an expansion of this.
