30 years of Bernstock Speirs exhibition
1982 was a revolutionary year for hats. It was the year that Bernstock Speirs established itself as the ultimate accessory label. Paul Bernstock and Thelma Speirs are the brilliant minds behind it all and they met whilst studying Fashion at Middlesex University. Sharing a passion for underground clubs and the music scene, they took the idea of something they loved and began creating hats, for both men and women, that challenged the idea of normal.
Bernstock Speirs are still here 30 years on, and still bringing a unique take to the popular fashion accessory. With a store in Brick Lane that opened in 2004 and a customer fan base including Victoria Beckham, Kirsten Dunst and Karl Lagerfeld, we certainly don’t think the duo are going to be disappearing anytime soon.
Today, the Fred Gallery in West London opened its doors in celebration to the success that the brand has had. Guests were invited to travel through time to learn about the history of Bernstock Speirs and be educated on what they have managed to bring to the world of fashion. From the Crushed Bowler to Veil Beanie, and not forgetting the infamous Candy Bunny Cap invented in 2010, the exhibition was truly an experience of hat heaven.
Photographs and videos of collaborations from the past 30 years cover walls, displaying the success and fun that both Paul and Thelma have had in creating this fantastic brand. From photos of Bananarama in their iconic pieces to fans such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Bernstock Speirs have established themselves as not only something completely individual, but something inspiring too.
To mark their success, Bernstock Speirs have designed a special edition black glitter Bunny Cap that, priced at £75, is now number one on our Christmas lists!
