Marymary Handmade: simple but effective
A simple silver pendant may mean little to one person, but to another it can be highly significant. At Marymary Handmade, all the pieces are simple but will definitely attract attention.
Mary is the woman behind the label. Ever since she was a child, growing up in Connecticut, she has always loved making things with her hands. She made mud pies outside, sculpted little clay creatures and taught herself how to crochet. Mary has always had a project on the go. She wanted to continue her education in jewellery making, so she applied to the Jewellery/Metalsmithing program at The School for American Crafts in Rochester, New York. The designer began working as a bench jeweller at a local jewellery store in her sophomore year. After earning her BFA in 2003, she spent several more years working in the industry, expanding her skills and learning about the industry itself.
Mary found Etsy while expanding her skills. “It was inspiring to see so many people selling their handmade work and supporting themselves through their online shops. I started to dream about being able to make a living creating my own work and in June, 2009, I decided to take the leap and open my own Etsy shop.”
The pieces at Marymary Handmade range from a spork necklace to a sock monkey necklace; you will find a wide variety of “characters” to suit everyone’s tastes. There is even a piece appropriate for Movember with the Movember Happy Sloth necklace.
What inspires such a diverse range though? Mary shed some light on this: “Most of my inspiration comes from the natural world with its endless supply of unique life. I also love the cute style of kawaii! I strive to combine these two loves to create pieces that are unique, light-hearted and fun.” When you’re looking at a cute cupcake necklace or a happy jellyfish, you can’t help but smile.
