All I Want for Christmas is New Year’s Day – Hurts

Most Christmas songs somehow incorporate the ringing of bells, and synth-pop duo Hurts’ festive track All I Want for Christmas is New Year’s Day is no exception. However, unlike most Christmas songs, All I Want for Christmas is New Year’s Day uses the sound of bells to spread despair instead of joy: it is the backdrop to vocalist Theo Hutchcraft’s gloomy and miserable lyrics about how “happiness has never been so far away”.  It’s an interesting, if not depressing, spin on the expectations of the festive season.
