London Collections: Men – Martine Rose A/W ‘13
Yesterday we were invited to attend the presentation of Martine Rose, however it quickly became apparent that it was more of a performance.
After showing she can create a fan base due to her role as founder member of label LMNOP which has been successful in Japan as well as in London, she was given MEN and NEWGEN MEN support for her collection to be showcased in London. We can see why as the collection is a perfect example of her ability to merge themes whilst consistently being aware of street style ensuring each items’ wearability. Carefully thought out models with bowl haircuts and lean frames gave each look its final touch.
As London Collections: Men continues, it is evident that leather and fur are trends here to stay over the next few seasons. Nevertheless Martine Rose looks at the Rasta community she experienced in Jamaica as the central theme to her collection.
‘‘A/W’13 is about sovereignty and status as defined by the wearer,’’ says Rose. ‘‘There’s a sense of confidence, ghetto kings and queens.’’
She has taken the idea of power not through money but through attitude in order to create this fantastic contrast between the thoughts of royalty in Jamaica and in London. Martine Rose manages to execute the message of hierarchy and sovereignty with the use of layering. She takes materials such as fur and replaces others with modern prints and jumpers. It is easy to find special pieces within this collection, especially the shirts because they are easy to wear, stylish and original.
