NYFW – David Tlale A/W 2013 collection

Being a relatively new designer, David Tlale is still at the point in his career where he can manage to get significantly better with each consecutive collection. 

His A/W 2013 collection, presented at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, was no exception. It was a truly grand sight to behold, with models wearing masterfully tailored, highly architectural designs in heavy eye make-up and slick hairstyles, while loud, dramatic world music was pumped through the sound system. The colour palette mainly consisted of a deep red, unashamedly shiny metallics, earth tones and neutrals. 

While Tlale’s more casual looks would surely befit any stylish, working woman on-the-go, it’s his evening wear that makes the most lasting impression. Three dresses in particular stood out above the rest. The first was a strapless scarlet and black number that was fitted from the bodice through the knee, and flared out into a brilliant circle of black tulle. The second, was a gown made of light pink, body hugging lace with long sleeves that similarly transformed into layers of cascading tulle towards the bottom. Only this time, the hue a more saturated pink and the tulle more voluminous. Finally, an ombré dress of ivory fading into gold, patterned with shining vines and flowers. Atop the dress, a sleeveless bolero jacket was fully embellished and revelled in its opulence. 

Though Tlale’s collection paints a picture of unapologetic glamour, it manages to portray refined elegance, as opposed to overindulgent decadence – a feat none too easy.
