Wiksten: bringing sentimentality back to design

It’s not every day that you find a website that offers a collection that so thoroughly encompasses the owner’s intended aesthetic: cheerful, quirky and sentimental with a vintage appeal. Jenny Gordy is designer and owner of the collection named after her Swedish grandmother, who taught Jenny to sew and helped nurture a life-long love for the craft. It is this passion and fervour that has been channelled into her collection Wiksten and the subsequent site, which sells both her collection and others that appeal to the overall feel she desires.

The site itself is feminine and flirty in its design, bringing to memory spring days in the countryside with its fresh, basic colours of pure white and sky blue. The website is easy to navigate, and its simplicity allows for the collections to really stand out. 

We absolutely adore the pieces on this site. Jenny intended, both when creating her own personal collection and selling others on the website, to “encourage thoughtful buying by giving our customers a personal connection to their purchases”. Mission accomplished. 

As we perused the site, we saw things that we would not only purchase for ourselves, but for others. The simplicity of the design is refreshing, rather than lacking. Apparel is custom-made and hand-sewn, once again allowing for the “personal connection” Jenny wants her customers to feel when they shop her site. 

The pieces are all created using natural fibers such as cotton, linen and silk, which adds to quality – something that is often hard to find within e-tailing, especially for the reasonable pricing being offered. We also love how uncluttered the site is, with separate sections for pieces that will be hand-made per customer request, and those pieces (accessories mostly) that can be ordered and shipped immediately.

We absolutely adore the knit hats and the simple gold bracelets.  Another added bonus is the ability to purchase inexpensively (around £10) a pattern of your own so that you can try your hand at creating custom-made goodies. Offering the patterns add the little touches of artistry that Jenny wants to be known for, giving customers the feeling of being thought of and encouraging that personal connection, not only between Jenny and her customers, but also the customers and the clothing they choose to wear.
