The fashionable Belle Époque: The greatest circus party in town
Last night, The Upcoming rolled up to the most extravagant event in London.
Belle Époque is a spectacular circus ball held only a few times throughout the year.
Yesterday’s event was held in a warehouse in Village Underground, the heart of Shoreditch. The warehouse had been transformed into a dazzling space that gave the illusion we were all at the circus.
The dress code was strict and everyone looked flamboyant, fitting perfectly into the circus theme. Men wore suits, braces and hats with a few going that extra mile with tailcoats. Women were adorned in sparkles and fancy headpieces – attire adopted from the Charleston era with corsets that transformed women into showgirls.
The weird and wonderful world of the circus is, of course not complete without breath-taking entertainment. Fine acrobats from across Europe twisted and turned their bodies into contours never seen before. The Falzinni twins stole the show with their epic trapeze acts executed with effortless skill.
As the cocktails flowed we were drawn to a huge dance-floor and a stall selling sweet treats and scrumptious sandwiches. Stairs led up to the mezzanine level, an intimate area hidden behind a curtain with a great view of the stage. Miss Marguerite was offering free make-up lessons and gem costume decorations in a painted wagon.
The DJ carried the night to it’s climax with jazz remixes of classic and contemporary songs. Belle Époque truly unleashed your inner carnival curiosities and was no doubt an event to remember.
