Smith/Grey: Where dark story-telling becomes wearable jewellery pieces
Smith/Grey is a jewellery brand that launched in February 2012. Inspiration for each unique design is taken from memories or roots back to stories or specific traditions. The handcrafted objects themselves are seen as story-telling objects, intended to arouse curiosity and the imagination.
The Smith/Grey brand is based in London where the products are made of an exquisite quality with an extensive attention to detail.
Jewellery designer Birgit Marie Schmidt (Smith) and creative strategist Sofus Graee (Grey) founded the brand. Smith/Grey is inspired by their surroundings and what they observe from those around them. A lot of their designs see their Scandinavian and Central European roots translated within their designs, and have a fusion of their British lifestyle that they have now adopted.
The products are timeless and unique pieces that are made with the highest quality.
Themes that exist throughout all of their collections are narratives of an enhanced reality and human imagination, made so that they are wearable.
Smith’s fascination, which is shown in her work, is how objects work with the human body. Grey is influenced by the communication between society and objects.
Their latest collection is entitled I can’t seem to get rid of the horses, and the pieces have an equestrian theme but with an unusual edge and dark fantasy twist. There are ear cuffs and knuckle clusters, which are very current at the moment, but the way in which the horses conjoin juxtaposes the elegance that a horse symbolises.
Being featured in Vogue, this brand is definitely one to keep an eye on.
