The Blue Elephant terrace launch party
For those well-versed in the exquisite and vibrant cuisine Southeast Asia has to offer, the promise of visiting London’s self-proclaimed “most iconic Thai restaurant” comes with near insurmountable expectations.
The Blue Elephant is a prominent and illustrious establishment, having won countless awards including “Best in Britain” by BIBA, “Best Restaurant” in Hammersmith’s Mini-Oscars, “The Best Thai Restaurant” by Thai Select and even “Bangkok’s Best Restaurant” by Bangkok Dining & Entertainment in 2007. Thankfully, this multi-award winning restaurant, conceptualised by the legendary chef, Nooror Somany Steppe, did not disappoint at all.
The Blue Elephant is celebrating the opening of its new terrace overlooking the Thames – inarguably the greatest geographical landmark in London. Now Londoners are able to experience some of the finest Thai cuisine al fresco throughout the summer months, while enjoying a truly incredible view.
Overall, the restaurant’s interior décor is brilliant. With the highest quality furniture and an assemblage of unique and striking Thai effigies, the ambiance is effortlessly serene and authentic. This is of no surprise, however, as the founder, Chef Nooror, did win the “Hospitality Asia Platinum Award”.
The food was even more impressive. Though some of the starters were not particularly notable (such as the Fish Cake or the Vegetarian Spring Roll) most of the food served was nothing short of outstanding. In particular, the Papaya Salad, Oysters and Satay Prawn Spring Roll are reason enough to make the journey to this South West London institution. Couple this with their inventive cocktails and expansive wine collection, and The Blue Elephant is a necessary sojourn for any Thai enthusiast looking for a great view to compliment an even better meal.
Unfortunately, the experience is not suitable for those with a light wallet; their most basic Sharing Platter will set you back £45 per person. Additionally, when you augment this with alcohol and dessert, diners are facing a very expensive evening.
Despite price considerations, the Blue Elephant does offer some of London’s best Thai food and an amazing venue to celebrate a special occasion (though diners looking for a solid Thai restaurant at a competitive price are best looking elsewhere).
