London Collections: Men – Spencer Hart S/S 2014

There was something in the air last night at the LC:M Spencer Hart S/S’14 show. The flashbulbs were already going wild when front row favourite David Gandy was taking his seat. He was soon joined by Reggie Yates, Dermot O’Leary but it wasn’t that that was making us sit at the edge on our seat. The well-produced show began with us sitting in the dark room waiting for the show to start, a voice shot through doing a masterful introduction of Funk legend James Brown. 

Using all black models, Nick Hart presented a nod to Funk. The colour palette showed a dash of muted browns, a midnight blue that was created for in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz followed by a base of classic summer whites and pale blues.

It was difficult to pin down exactly which cultures the collection was inspired by as the high-low lengths of the jackets and shirts could easily have been Indian, Middle Eastern or West African. Regardless of the inspiration, one thing was very clear; the audience seemed to be breathing a sigh of relief to be seeing a collection that loosens the tie just a little bit. Stiff Savile Row tailoring was replaced by lightweight shirts and a sense of fun in dressing up.

As the lights came down, they were soon turn down once more as Nick Hart presented a short video that explained his collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. With a brand new car in the lobby area, for a change no one was keen to rush away.
