The Internship

Did you know “Googliness” was measurable? 

In Shawn Levy’s latest film, the new summer internship candidates are taking a step through the primary coloured doors of Google, California, and two of them have some very familiar faces. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, the original Wedding Crashers double act, are back to light up the big screen with their big personalities and even bigger sense of humour.

Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson) play an obsolete sales duo whose well-honed skills have fallen foul to the advancement of technology. Consequently they lose their jobs, along with their way in life – a brutal and very existent truth in the 21^st century.

Arriving at Google headquarters as the two intern wildcards, Billy and Nick join a whole host of other wannabe Googlers in a bid to win a job at the end of the summer. Dividing into teams, the candidates must compete in groups against each other in challenges reminiscent of “mental Hunger Games”, ranging from app design to dealing with the Google call centre and even a spellbinding team game of Quidditch.

Predominantly about Billy and Nick’s rise from zero to hero, The Internship is also a light-hearted insight into the colourful world behind the world’s biggest search engine, the people and processes that, step by step, bring everybody closer together with information they seek.

The story is predictable and transparent, however, the diversity of the characters – each as different as the Google’s four colours – makes for compelling, heart-warming entertainment.
Even Vaughn’s usual role as the loser can be excused given that he co-wrote this film and after previous practise in films such as The Break-Up and Dodgeball he really does have this stereotype down to a tee.

With a good soundtrack to kick this film into action, a few unexpected cameos (look out for Will Ferrell and John Goodman) and a whole lot of fun, The Internship really does press all the right keys, and is guaranteed to search out some laughter from everyone.
