Après Ski brings us the universe
Après Ski have created beautiful collections in the past. The latest offering from them though brings the universe to committed followers of the label.
The latest collection for 2013 is entitled Twilight. It continues to have roots in nature like the past collections did. Twilight is articulated around the idea that opposites are two sides of the whole in the universe. Social convention sees opposites as concepts in confrontation with each other, while in nature opposites are complementary concepts since one cannot exist without the other. The collection encompasses the idea of complementary opposites in nature, as the word “twilight” refers to the moments of diffused light that appear both at dawn and dusk.
Initially the pieces appeared as pairs of necklaces that complemented each other. They represented two different aspects of the same idea. The pieces are arranged to reflect the concept of duality in nature, for example, Light-shadow, Tropic-Polar, Desert-Oasis, Wood-Tree and East-West.
The collection features some gorgeous colours. These were inspired by colours and patterns from mocha ware, a type of utilitarian pottery from the late 17th century. It also captures the essence of Après Ski of creating simple pieces that can be worn every day. Après usually use pastel colours, but this latest collection sees them using deep blues, greens, burgundy and orange, and combining them with black and white geometric patterns. They’ve also added a new material to their portfolio by using ceramic beads in their latest offering.
What inspires this change in direction for Lucia Vergara, designer behind Après Ski? “When I saw a photo of mocha ware for the first time, roughly a year ago, it was love at first sight for me. I felt a deep connection with its aesthetic and the urge of wanting to learn more about it. After getting some books on the subject I was astonished to learn these pieces were antiques from the 17th century because the colours, patterns and shapes feel really modern even today.”
If you like Après’ past work then you will adore this new collection. If you’ve never seen their work before, then now is the time to invest in a piece of Après Ski; you won’t regret it.
