The next big thing: fashion for guinea pigs
Dressing up our pet dog or our pet cat is almost a norm in today’s fashion-conscious society, but dressing up our guinea pigs? Well, that’s a concept that has never been heard of, or even thought of. The world’s leading fashion designers haven’t even created such clothes but, somewhere far in Tokyo, Maki Yamada is brimming with ideas for the little creatures.
The 28-year-old designer is probably the first person to create fashion for guinea pigs, and she is extremely proud of her original ideas. Her love for guinea pigs first began when she saw them in the zoo, which then spurred her on to buy them the next day. Now, she owns three guinea pigs and she uses them as models for her website.
Although Maki’s idea may seem absurd and completely bizarre, she has received many orders from customers across the world. Special requests such as a wedding dress and Boston Red Sox uniform have been sent. She has a rapidly growing fan base, and a single photo of her guinea pig has been reblogged 20,000 times on Tumblr.
The clothes that she creates are cute and fun which is why many people, especially from Japan as the Japanese market specialises in cute items, have been buying off her website. Currently, she has created wigs, sundresses, kimonos and a Santa Clause outfit, which have all been a popular rage across the world.
Adding to her fame, she has also been discovered by an English news outlet, Daily Mail, which has vastly increased the amount of press attention and international attention she has received. Not being fully aware of how popular she has become, Maki is modest and says that her fame is surreal.
The way Maki is heading, fashion for guinea pigs might be the next big thing. These outfits might soon be hitting the shelves in the UK, so dogs and cats won’t be the only trendsetters. Maki uses her guinea pigs as guinea pigs, excuse the pun, which has set another high standard of fashion for our little pets.
