Mediterranean brand Medwinds makes waves in London
Hailing from the Ravel district of Barcelona, which founder and director of the brand Lorenzo Fluxa Orti describes as “one of the nicest and richest areas in the world in terms of nature, cultures and the way we enjoy life,” Medwinds brings the energy and culture of this part of the world into its contemporary and wearable collections.
All garments are designed and produced in small local factories on the Mediterranean coast with materials that are ethically sourced from local producers. The Defusta 2 sunglasses, a personal favourite from the collection, are crafted from hand-collected driftwood from the nearby beaches.
Some other stand-out pieces from the current collection are the Deia thong sandals – made almost entirely from leather; the quality is exquisite. The shape of this sandal frames the foot beautifully and is the perfect complement to any summer ensemble. The brand’s eye-catching Buqbuq satchel is handmade from natural leather and its unfinished edges coupled with a high quality finish tops off any look with an air of effortless chic.
Medwinds’ latest initiative, “On The Beach” brings designers from different disciplines into the fashion world for one-off collaborations, resulting in collections inspired by the designer’s own interpretation of the Mediterranean way of life. A recent joint venture with Japanese furniture designer Naoto Fukasawa sees pieces such as sleek minimalist button-down shirts and a variety of elegant beachwear appear alongside a bat and ball beach game and deck chair. It is clear from collaborations like this that the brand is fiercely loyal to its own heritage and doesn’t simply follow seasonal fashion trends. Instead Medwinds is the Mediterranean through and through, which is what sets this brand apart from others says Fluxa Orti: “We are from the Med, and we get our inspiration from the Med and everything we love and enjoy on the Med.”
Medwinds are currently working with a design school based in Barcelona for their upcoming collection along with two other young designers from the Mediterranean, so watch this space!
