Pumpkinseed Jewellery: making it personal
Jewellery can be quite generic sometimes, especially when you buy it from a high street store and you see several other people wearing the same thing. Some pieces of jewellery should be personal to you and only for you. That’s where Pumpkinseed Jewellery excels.
Pumpkinseed is label created by Rebecca Thomas, who chose the name from her favourite poem by Robert Hass. Rebecca has always loved poetry, she even majored in it at college, but she didn’t know what to do with the little bits of text she had collected and treasured. After borrowing a rudimentary engraver from a friend, she practised engraving poetry bits on silverware and this turned into a hobby.
Rebecca’s process is different to most other jewellery makers in that the poetry and engraving on the item informs her about how the piece will be created, rather than aesthetics being foremost. Rebecca said: “I have a sense of what text works well with what kind of charms, or at least I hope I do…. and so many engraved options look so machine-made, whether they are laser-engraved or stamped, it doesn’t evoke the feeling of an old letter, which is something I romanticise highly, and think other people do as well.”
Pumpkinseed’s jewellery is gorgeous and you can literally make it as personal as you want. You could invest in this letter necklace and have a personalised engraved letter inside. If you prefer a traditional locket Rebecca can engrave something inside for you. She even engraves on flasks, if you want something personal for the man in your life.
What inspires Rebecca when she creates these pieces you’re wondering, Rebecca said: “My biggest inspiration is my customers. In the beginning I made pieces with my favourite quotes engraved on styled necklaces, some of which I still sell. But when I begin making personalised pieces, I became much more involved with customers and the responses I have gotten have also changed dramatically, for the better.” Rebecca makes the effort to make sure you get a piece that is truly personal to you. She asks you what shape you would like the locket, the message and even the length of the chain. Rebecca creates pieces that should last a long time and can be passed down amongst generations. She concludes: “I want everybody to be able to carry on their history and their secret messages for as long as possible, and that’s why I engrave.”
