Paola Balzano: combining architecture and femininity

Paola Balzano is reviving the “Made in Italy” concept and produces stunning high-end clothes with a fantastic mix of architectural and feminine elements. We caught up with Paola to find out more about the brand that’s transcending seasons.

What sets your brand apart from the rest?

Paolo Balzano: The aim of the brand is to produce high-end luxury clothes that can be worn in everyday life.  Clothes that can be categorised as “Meta-Couture” (from the Greek preposition μετά that refers to the transformation of the traditional couture garment into a luxury product that can be made in series) and offer exclusive design content.  The tradition of Italian manufacturing and the freshness of a contemporary elegance are important elements that characterise our unique style.

What inspires you?

My classical studies influenced my conceptual approach to fashion; I’m very interested in seeing things from different perspectives and art, philosophy and literature are often the starting point of my research.  Elements from nature also take an important role in my creative process as what inspires me is their metaphorical meaning that I can then translate into my own vision.

Would you say that education or experience is more important?

I believe that we are all the result of a combination of both.  My education and background have played a significant role in my approach to life and my experience.

What makes London such a great city to start a brand?

London’s inspiring atmosphere and its multi-cultural and dynamic environment make it a great city for a creative mind to be, and it gives you the opportunity to express yourself as a designer. 

Do you design and produce everything in-house?

I design in-house, but everything is produced and made in Italy.

Have you got a favourite piece that you’ve designed so far?

The high-waisted skirt with the Japanese leather panel and also the printed silk and black wool jacket. I love the architectural shapes and how the print stands out from the black background.

How do you combine the architectural and feminine elements?

The combination of opposites and the research of an ideal balance between them have always fascinated me.  I like experimenting with contrasting materials and textures and combining structured elements inherited by male tailoring with more feminine details.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?

There’s a long list of artists, designers and photographers I would love to collaborate with but I would be honoured to have my clothes shot by Tim Walker!

Where do you want to see your brand in the future?

Seeing how my brand develops and grows every day shows me that the hard work pays off, and inspires me to keep believing in my vision.  I’d like to see my clothes in selected boutiques around the world; I want to stay niche and keep making luxury clothes and statement pieces that can be worn season after season.
