Shoshanna Lee: preciously primitive jewellery
Despite only being founded in 2010, Shoshanna Lee already has a deep celebrity following and is featured in boutiques across the world. Inspired by the primitiveness of human nature and featuring a range of stunning precious stones, this rapidly growing jewellery range is definitely every girl’s new best friend and we caught up with Shoshanna to find out more.
What makes your brand different?
The combination of the stones, design and the way each piece is handmade. To bead is to bow ones head in prayer. Every piece is made in a serene and spiritual environment, which I think is reflected in the design and the feel of each piece.
What caused you to go into fashion and why did you choose jewellery?
I have always been into fashion, but it was less my choice and more that it chose me. I had made some bracelets with my teenage daughter at a local bead store and took them to a friend’s grab bag party. They were so popular that some of the girls asked if they could buy them. I sat at my kitchen table and made enough to take to a local high-end boutique. They sold out the same day and ordered more. I realized I may be able to start a jewellery business and Shoshanna Lee Jewellery was born.
Has not having a formal education made things easier or harder for you?
For me, not having a formal education actually makes it so much easier because there are no rules, boundaries or expectations. I believe having a sense of style is something innate and, again for me, has developed over time and is still developing.
What inspires you to create and design?
Every time a new piece is created there’s a sense of accomplishment and the reward of women feeling good when they wear my jewellery. I want women to feel great about themselves.
Who wears your designs?
Women who want to add a little something extra to their jewellery collection in order to create a new look that compliments their existing wardrobe. The women who buy my designs shop in high-end boutiques and department stores throughout the United States, in Canada and London, England.
Have you got any favourite pieces?
Right now my two favourite pieces are the Kiki bracelet and the new snake ring.
Would you ever consider expanding into clothing?
I have just developed my first scarf line, which will be in stores in September. This will be the launch of Shoshanna Lee Textiles with my partner Stephanie Sachs.
Have you had any career highlights?
A highlight for me can range from getting a new account, to someone bidding four times the price of a necklace at a charity event, to launching our scarf line, or someone just buying a piece of jewellery and being excited about wearing it so there have been plenty!
