NYFW S/S ‘14 – DKNY spring/summer collection
As DKNY celebrated its 25th birthday on the catwalk, we were pleasantly surprised with a variety of looks that all stayed true to one trend in particular: sport-luxe. Models Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss both strutted their stuff wearing Donna Karan’s designs.
Minimalism and effortless cool were definitely themes of the show, as we were shown designs created from light-weight fabrics, including what seems to be an S/S ’14 favourite: sheer organza.
Body suits, sweatpants, hooded jackets and sweatshirts all adorned with “DKNY” lettering stood out big and bold in monochrome themes, and as an ode to the label’s 25th year, we also saw “25” emblazoned upon various garments.
It was a clear 90s revival for DKNY, with pieces that gave a nostalgic nod towards the era. Denim jackets with patches sewn on them and baseball caps were clear signs of a fashion show that was reminiscing the past. Pastel colour-blocking and paisley prints all stole the show, as garments were put together to create some credible street grunge-esque looks. Karan also gave her audience the pleasure of viewing a few menswear pieces, as male models took to the catwalk in between the females.
As an unexpected surprise for the finale of the show, British “Radioactive” pop singer Rita Ora modelled the last look, consisting of an A-line skirt worn over a sheer pencil skirt. With red lips and that cute blonde bob-cut, she looked every bit a DKNY girl who was celebrating the brand’s 25th birthday.
