NYFW S/S ‘14 – New York Fashion Week Spring 2014: A surprise appearance at Diane von Furstenberg
As head of a global luxury lifestyle brand and president of the CFDA, Diane von Furstenberg is quite a busy lady. For her spring 2014 collection, she wanted to create an oasis amongst the chaos of her day-to-day and bring focus to harmony, serenity and colour.
The designer toyed with head-to-toe prints, rope detailing and sunset hues that have us dreaming up next summer’s exotic holiday. Perhaps the most obvious nod to the continuing tribal trend was Furstenberg’s dress of choice for the night: a colour-blocked, safari landscape print with a silhouette of what looks like a scene straight out of The Lion King. DVF kept silhouettes predictably retro with her signature wrap-dress, plunging necklines, and wide-legged pants. Celebrities such as Rachel Zoe, Sheryl Crow and Paris Hilton bopped their heads in the audience to a feel-good summer jam soundtrack of Daft Punk, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.
The supermodel and now television show host Naomi Campbell took to the runway in a surprise appearance that may have overshadowed Furstenberg’s collection, but supported it in its own right. The runway queen herself closed the show in a black, white and gold macrame shift dress, setting social media platforms ablaze with “OMG” hashtags from excited editors in attendance.
Diane von Furstenberg’s collections are far more than fabulous jet-set glamour. They reflect a certain uplifting spirit reminiscent of decades past. In a behind the scenes pre-show Instagram from model Karli Kloss, the designer encouraged the girls: “Show personality and be the woman you want to be!” The celebration of diversity and womanhood resounds throughout all of Furstenberg’s collections and her spring 2014 collection was no exception.
