LFW – S/S 2014: 90s inspired grunge and purple haze take over the faces of London Fashion Week

As London Fashion Week kicks off there are two opposing beauty styles that have taken over the faces of the stunning models; the grungy 90s styling that was featured at Antipodium, Whistles and Mark Fast and the contrasting soft and vintage inspired pretty purple make up seen on the catwalks of Zoe Jordan, Holly Fulton and PPQ.

Georgina Graham of MAC cited that Antipodium used cult movie Clueless as inspiration as well as 90s grunge to offer a light-hearted and fun look. Guy-liner and smudge mascara worked as a stark comparison to the baby pinks, lime greens and ice blue colours. The hair was also 90s inspired with a slightly cleaner and neater take on the naturally parted grungy style; fresh yet messy with a great deal of bounce that doesn’t look too done.

Whistles was another that looked to the 1990s for vision; they used American cosmetics company Revlon and their trademark red nail polish for a smartened up take on the 90s raver. Paired with bushy eyebrows, nude lips and flushed cheeks the Whistles models rocked the flawless 90s make-up with ease.

As for Mark Fast, the Canadian knitwear designer showcased his funky fashion line in a punk inspired manner with dark eyes, dark lips and messy dark hair. Fast used bare Minerals beauty line to create the gothic look and make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom advised that Marilyn Mansen and a 90s Gothic rave-girl were the idea behind the dark styling.

On the other end of the scale Zoe Jordan used the pretty colours of Bourjois for soft, romantic beauty. Eye shadow creams in silver, lilac and blue paired with rosy lips and cheeks offered an easy to achieve pretty perfect look.

Also rocking purple were the models for PPQ with make-up from Maybelline, although they had a slightly more dramatic edge then those at Zoe Jordan the outcome was similar. Purple cream eye shadow represented a seductive, vampy side whereas the pink, faded lips offered a softer spring look.

The third designer to jump on the purple bandwagon was Holly Fulton who used the products of MAC and James Read to create a glamorous face. As with PPQ and Zoe Jordan the skin was fresh and a great deal of focus went on the eyes. Mauve, lilac and a lick of shimmer matched her pastel prints wonderfully and paired with the voluminous waves completed the 70s inspired set.
