LFW – Ji Cheng S/S 2014 collection
One of Asia’s most renowned designers, Ji Cheng has returned to LFW’s Vauxhall Fashion Scout to showcase her SS14 collection at Freemason’s Hall; but this season’s presentation came with a dramatic twist. Crowds of eager people congregated at the doors as the show succeeded in being “fashionably delayed”.
Whisperings of an exciting show ahead were faintly heard from PRs bustling to and from backstage – raising enthusiasm of what was to come. Finally the swarms were let through – Ji Cheng’s SS14 presentation commenced.
Before the models were released to the runway a cinematic screen lit up, exhibiting a short and surreal film. It set an interesting air for her design revelation. Out swam a rich, dark palette of reds, blacks and golden creams and washed out with softer hues such as mint green, pinks, blues and yellows. An oriental theme seemed to be the focal point of this collection. Cheng who usually intertwines her designs with an Eastern twist decided to evolve this further with her new line deriving heavy inspiration from the Far East.
Model’s make-up consisted of Geisha-styled eyebrows, dewy, light-toned complexions and cherry blossom pinks enhancing the eyes. Similarly, hair was knotted into a traditional Geisha style but with certain modernity interlaced.
Her collection featured a range of evening and daywear. Cropped tops and bright, high-waisted skirts spiced up the oriental aura. Elegant kimonos and beautifully tailored oversized coats and shorts breezed by. A pretty blue shift dress, embellished with cream flowers added a dainty feel to the collection.
And let’s not forget about the shoes! Some fabulous heels were revealed, all intricately designed. Some sparkled, some added modernity but all produced a creative stomp.
The show began with some intriguing visuals, so of course it had to balance with a unique ending. As we waited for the models to take their final circle, a beautiful singing voice pricked attention. With an extension of the neck it became clear that a petite singer had taken the runway, her enchanting voice resonating throughout the venue. Models then paraded out to give us the final glance of the collection. Ji Cheng received a bouquet of flowers and the show was complete – an artistic exhibition to highlight a creative collection.
