Press day: fashion forward labels, one off designs and vintage finds from Cagecity
Yesterday Cagecity held their very first press day and The Upcoming was invited along to see what the unique clothes boutique has in store for us in the coming seasons.
Held in an almost secret underground shopping gallery, the pop-up shop was filled with lots of tasty treats for guests including jars of classic sweets, sugary raspberry and rum cocktails, and even had a mini design studio where guests could try their hand at decorating their own beanie. The selection of clothes being previewed was just as fun, with an eclectic mix of colour, print, shape and texture to fill our wardrobes for S/S 2014.
Cagecity is a UK-based online store that specialises in finding something original and unique and not necessarily the next huge trend. Rather than sticking to a certain style, Cagecity works with young designers and established labels who each bring a little of their own style to the brand.
“We showcase fashion forward up and coming brands, provide young creatives with a market to sell their handmade designs and add in some sweet vintage for good measure,” says Cagecity.
Alongside quirky brands like Mink Pink and Evil Twin, we found young designer Martha Carlyle who graduated this year and already has been scouted by Cagecity. Her designs, available S/S 2014, will bring a little 60s influence to contemporary styles. Carlyle uses a monochrome palette to play with stripes; both typical of 60s fashion, but brings it into the modern day by adding mesh stripes for a cheeky element.
“My collection is actually pieces from my graduate show. I looked at 60s style but put a new, modern twist on it,” Carlyle told The Upcoming. “I wanted to work with Cagecity because I think they’re great for up and coming talent and a great place to get a collection out there and noticed.”
The Upcoming also love the brash designs of Sadé Farrell, whose over-sized t-shirts and bomber jackets are created from strips of different fabric, incorporating neon colours and animal prints in different textures.
Many of the clothes on offer are exclusive to Cagecity, and with pieces often being handmade by the designers, you are sure to find something unique and of excellent quality.
