Colour your locks crazy this Christmas with our guide to hair chalk

With the re-form of McBusted earlier on this month, we can’t help but still want to be the girl with five colours in our hair! With the likes of Rita Ora and Blake Lively showing exactly how to wear bright and bold shades in our hair, the fashion world is still going wild for wacky hair styles, but with it being so easy, who can blame them?

For those who are confused, hair chalk is an easy, non-permanent way of colouring your hair in all the shades you could ever possibly want. You simply rub a chalk onto the section of hair you want to colour, and voila! You have a brand-new hairstyle. But how do you know which one to pick? Well, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best hair chalks around to help you add a touch of style to your tips during the winter season.

L’Oreal Hair Chalk

Launching their new hair chalk at the beginning of November, L’Oreal’s take on hair colouring has taken the hair world by storm. L’Oreal Professional Hair Chalk comes in five bolder colours, and three more delicate shades. Designed in order to co-ordinate with your outfit, your shoes or your accessories, L’Oreal have got it exactly right. Used backstage at London Fashion Week for Felder Felder and Ashish, this colouring is proving to be a huge hit with all our favourite designers too.

Our favourite is First Date Violet and is available to buy online and in L’Oreal salons around London, priced at around £15.

Kevin Murphy Colour Bug

We first came across Kevin Murphy’s Colour Bug a few seasons ago at London Fashion Week. Inside a gift bag we found this odd-shaped dome in a range of different colours. After taking off the cap and fitting our fingers into the perfectly dipped finger spaces, we realised this wasn’t just a toy, it was a take on a genius idea of hair colouring. Taking his influence from the 80s and the French Revolution, Murphy had designed a wash-in, wash-out colour that was flawless as soon as it was applied to the tips of your hair. Available in pink, purple, orange, white, neon and shimmer, it is perfect to add a touch of glitz to your tips this Christmas. The Colour Bug, our favourite of all the hair chalks, is available to buy online, or at Topshop’s flagship Oxford Circus store.

Fudge Urban hair chalk

If you don’t have a big budget and want to test out colouring your hair then Fudge Urban is the one for you. Priced at just £5.99 and available at Superdrug stores across the UK, it is ideal for you not breaking the bank and brightening up your hair style this December. Despite it being a little messier to use, we still rate this particular hair chalk, and you can team it with the Fudge Urban Iced White shade to create a softer pastel look.

When you’ve decided which is the one for you, we have some top tips to help you get the most from your colour:

Wear your hair up to avoid the colours rubbing onto your brand-new outfit.

Even if you are brunette, go for it. The colours still work and still look fantastic!

Twist your hair when you are chalking it. The colour can be applied better this way.

Don’t over-do it! Some of the shades are bright, but sometimes less is more!
