Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel opened Desigual’s show at the first official day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. On the catwalk we spotted another model, known for her work for the lingerie brand – Erin Heatherton.
Desigual presented a highly-anticipated collection inspired by the brand’s hometown Barcelona and named Love in the City. The colours were calmer and darker than the Spanish label’s usual palette: violet, navy, hunter green, burgundy, tawny and gold, with materials such as jacquard, tulle, silk, satin and wool. The clothes were once again showing Christian Lacroix influence – Lacroix has been part of the brand’s designer team since 2011. Floral and polka dot patterns, views from Desigual’s design offices at the beach of Barcelona, iconic mandalas and artisan embroideries decorated the clothes.
Our eyes stopped on the playful hound’s tooth prints combined with burgundy red – seen in a combination of jacket with velvet flocking and a black shift dress with hound’s tooth circular appliques. We also loved the combination of jacquard with neon orange, which felt refreshing, yet very classy, as well as the ombre fading shades of grey pieces.
Among the highlights of the collection was a funnel neck sweater in textured double-knit jacquard with black and white kaleidoscopic design, accompanied by furry mini-shorts in angora wool blend and a long-sleeved silk blouse printed with the signature for Desigual prints, matched with a high-waist tulip skirt. Another gem was a model of gold lame daisy-weave jacquard bomber and wool raglan sleeves and a matching mini flared skirt.
The brand has been showing a transition to calmer, subtle colours in the past two collections, but still captures free spirit, fun and eclectic stylistics. Desigual is also known for its playful shows, showing artistry and encouraging the models to smile and interact with the audience.
