NYFW – Rebecca Vallance A/W 2014 collection
The Australian designer Rebecca Vallance had her New York debut yesterday at the Hub, a few blocks south of Lincoln Center where Mercedes-Benz has been setting up its main fashion week show space for the past few years.
The title of her autumn/winter 2014 collection is Lady’s Man and it offers garments with a strong blend of masculine and feminine traits.
“It’s a mixture of menswear-inspired cuts with a ladylike polish to them,” Vallance explained to The Sydney Morning Herald while preparing for the show. ”I found that personally I was wearing more pieces with a menswear influence, so I’ve translated that into the collection.”
This blend of masculinity and femininity is expressed through the bold, simple lines of the garments and the wide variety of fabrics and textures employed. In the collection we find anything from leather, lace, cashmere, silks, velvet and brocades.
Among the most strikingly androgynous, simple, elegant designs are the linear shell top and black leather shorts, the blue brocade crop top and pencil skirt, the gold hurel dress, the long-sleeved animal print lace dress, and the black broderie dress.
Particularly intriguing in the presentation were the strongly contrasting black and white separates punctuating the otherwise mostly monochromatic collection. Combinations such as the ivory silk crepe blouse and the black broderie pencil skirt or the linear white top and the black leather shorts dramatically expressed the masculine-feminine polarity while perfectly blending in the overall assertive simplicity and elegance of the collection.
Rebecca Vallance was founded in Sydney in 2009 and has since been worn on the red carpet by celebrities such as Sofia Vergara, Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson.
