Ma-ko: the brand that people stop to ask you about
London-bred Ma-ko was originally started by founder and owner Mashaal Jolly. After graduating with a fashion degree from the University of Creative Arts in 2012, she continued to spend her time working as a stylist in boutiques across the capital. Such experience allowed Mashaal to learn first-hand what people buy, and take on a broadened understanding of fashion consumerism. With a taste of what people like to buy, Mashaal created a brand of her own. This is how Ma-ko was born.
After spending a year learning and researching fashion, Mashaal combined her experiences with her family’s fashion culture (which has over three generations of fashion experience) to create a label that she believes fills a gap in the market. Priding the brand on owning something that is “exclusive and authentic”, Ma-ko is now a unique, much-needed part of the fashion world.
In order to keep the brand so individual, Mashaal carefully creates a maximum of three of each garment. By doing this, it allows her to stay true to the exclusivity of her idea, and also allows her to use only one-off fabric pieces, making her garments really special.
The Blush collection is a true representation of something special. Made up of basic colours, such as khaki, white and cream, and full of textures, it is basic yet simply beautiful. Some of our favourite picks are the Pearl White Maxi Shirt Dress (£120), the Leather Sleeve Wool Tunic Dress (£85) and Ice A-Line Under Layer Shirt (£65). The collection also features silver jewellery, and we absolutely adore the Dainty Silver Tube Chain necklace, priced at a bargain £12.
Mashaal has recently showcased her collection at The Chapel in Peckham, continuing to show the quirkiness and eccentricity of the brand.
The Ma-ko website describe their ideal customer as someone who “has the confidence to wear statement pieces that people stop to ask about” and we know we certainly do.
