Luis Antonio catwalk show report for NYFW S/S 2015
The runway was abuzz on Saturday with Luis Antonio’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, this being his New York Fashion Week debut. The designer’s cult-like following in Puerto Rico was apparent in the vibrant, excited faces of audience members. Having dressed the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, his forthcoming collection was undoubtedly going to be amazing.
The perfect balance of feminine and daring, Antonio took inspiration from his native country’s flag. Utilizing bold red, white, and blue stripes, with elegant, sweeping silhouettes. Taking such a symbol of national pride and translating it to fashion is no easy feat, and Antonio proved his designer talent by doing just that.
From bold stripes and long dresses, he transitioned to more structured cocktail dresses in a rope print. On a large scale, the print emphasized the curves of the silhouette, and on a smaller scale created such an interesting texture that moved across the body. On some dresses, he furthered the swirling movement of the print by beading small areas of the garment; for some the back, the front, or the hem.
The final looks for his debut collection showed his love of sparkle, with entire dresses covered in beading, and several garments made of a lamé knit that fell away from the body. These clothes embraced a more subdued colour palette, in white, beige, and midnight blue. One could easily see Antonio had fun with this collection, not only as a designer, but a patriotic Puerto Rican.
