Zang Toi catwalk show report for NYFW S/S 2015
No surprise that Zang Toi names his 25th anniversary collection A privileged life: the American dream as he can be studied as the perfect example of it.
Born in a small village in Malaysia at the age of 20 he moved to New York, studied fashion in Parsons School of Design and in August 1989 opened his atelier House of Toi. Soon after he was featured in March 1990s edition of Vogue USA, and was awarded with the Mouton Cadet Young Designer of the Year award. Now 25 years later his new collection captures Toi’s signature lavish and truly glamorous chic highly inspired by staples of the US fashion taste – red, blue, black and white stripes and floral motives.
The front line for his anniversary show was definitely star-studded – among members of The Real Housewives of New York City, The Real Housewives of Atlanta and The Real Housewives of New Jersey we also spotted Ivana Trump, Whoopy Goldberg and actor Vincent de Paul, British reality TV star and photographer Nigel Barker and his wife Cristen Barker.
The show opened under the sounds of Lana Del Ray’s National Anthem, followed by Lenny Kravitz”s American Woman. The first outfit was an epitome of the US high-end fashion – a black crocodile “all American” oversize motorcycle vest paired with bi-colour bamboo jersey tunic.
The following models sported bold red pantsuits and structured red and white striped sport coats, contrasting with cap-sleeve emerald green coats with silver accents. Zang Toi showed his virtuosity in orchid print airy gowns and classic black dresses paired with long strains of pearls. By tradition the collection included few male pieces modelled by American Ballet Theater’s principle dancer (and model) Cory Stearns. The last three outfits presented a portrait of an American heiress, an all American prince and a Palm Beach grand dame paying a tribute to the culture that pretty much made Zang Toi the glamorous fashion icon he is today.
