Opening for Nick Hakim on 20th January was artist Jake Sherman. His low, clear vocals paired with his love of all musical instruments filled the room with a vibrancy found in local jazz lounges. Sherman’s musical background of piano, organ, and a love of ragtime certainly set the stage for the mellow earthy tones of Nick Hakim.
The main act released his two-part album last year: Where Will We Go, Pt 1 and Pt 2. After listening to Sherman, the beats of Nick Hakim’s songs, Cold and I Don’t Know,is defined but his same smooth and airy vocals solidified a nice transition from the opener. Coming to us from DC, this singer-songwriter presents ballads that are layered with rich, yet washed-out timbre and deep lyrical resonance. Hakim has created a raw, alternative perspective on soul and blues that ignites an experience you may even enjoy with your eyes closed.
