Best denim buys for spring
Our favourite staple fabric, denim, dominated the S/S 2015 runways at the fashion capitals and is fast becoming the biggest (and easiest) trend to wear.
We’re talking about more than a standard skinny jean to upgrade your style status this season though. Frida Giannini opted for cropped straight legs at Gucci, Valentino added lavish detailing and at Burberry, super cropped jackets in indigo hues took precedence. It is clear that denim has been revolutionised for spring, the key being creativity and diversity. Based on this, we’ve chosen a few of the best denim buys to get you started.
Urban Renewal vintage re-made denim culottes, £55, Urban Outfitters
Culottes were the “trouser of the moment” for S/S 2014 so it’s no surprise that they’ve been updated in denim for this year. A wide leg denotes instant chic but not everyone is comfortable channelling the 70s head on by wearing flares. Culottes make for a great in-between with the added bonus that they can play both business and casual. For a smart look opt for a tailored pair in a deep shade of blue but when you’re out of the office try those with details such as fraying and panels, as seen at Urban Outfitters, to seem effortless.
WAVEN denim duster coat, £70, ASOS
Cropped jackets aren’t for everyone, especially if you’re still working on that bikini booty! The good news is denim outerwear has been tweaked this season and the result: denim dusters. Long and loose, dusters are the ultimate combination of shabby chic and practicality. It also works perfectly with the transitioning weather; wear it with cigarette trousers for March and then layer over a shift dress (a denim one if you want to double-up) in the summer months. Having this piece in your wardrobe will transform any outfit into a denim delight.
Blue denim grandad collar dress, £24.99, New Look
Denim dresses have been brought to the foreground this spring, the favourite being the shirt dress. It’s been revived for the denim takeover, no longer being considered frumpy or unflattering. Alexa Chung offers a tight, thigh-scraping style with a series of buttons down the middle in her collection with AG Jeans which is far from dowdy! In fact, the denim shirt dress is sure to score you some serious style points as it achieves a minimalist feel. To ensure this, keep accessories simple and team with pointed flats to follow in Alexa’s footsteps.
MOTO black denim dungarees, £48, Topshop
Dungarees are back! This may strike horror in some of you, bringing back memories of your childhood but the truth is, in order to be a full-on fashionista for S/S 2015, you need this one-piece. Rest assured that they’ve been given a modern twist, propelling them into the 21st century. Black denim and fitted, straight leg styles prevail the high street. Wearing this with a crisp white blouse and chunky, patent loafers will ensure daytime cool, while teaming the dungarees with bold, laced heels will make you the best dressed on the dance floor.
