Ten of the coolest bars you can find on the slopes
It’s not just about the slopes when it comes to a ski holiday, for many of us the après ski scene is also super important – after all, you need somewhere to unwind after a long day of physical activity, preferably somewhere that serves alcohol!
Here’s a rundown of the coolest bars you’ll find on the slopes at popular après-ski destinations in both Europe and in the US. These bars aren’t ranked from high to low; each one offers something unique and unusual so it all depends what you’re looking for when it comes to evening entertainment:
Krazy Kanguruh, St Anton, Austria
Looking for a bar that starts happy hour at 3.30pm? You’ve found it. Based in the popular St Anton resort the Krazy Kanguruh is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a bar that features people dancing on tables and having Jägermeister poured into their mouths throughout the night.
Dick’s Tea Bar, Val D’lsere, France
Open till 5am every day this is the bar to head to if you’re looking to party all night. Simply dump your skis at the door, peel that Superdry ski suit off and get the shots in. As well as plenty of booze of course, the bar also features beer pong, board games and hand crafted milkshakes until 10pm, then live music until 1am, when finally the DJ sets kick in and the nightclub area opens up.
White Lounge Igloo Bar, Mayrhofen, Austria
If you can’t get enough of the snow then pay a visit to the White Lounge Igloo Bar in the evening, where you don’t need to take off your ski gear to enjoy it. The bar is essentially a six metre high igloo, featuring candle lit lounges and deckchairs in the sun overlooking the mountains. Perfect for when you fancy a quiet one after a busy day on the slopes.
Farinet Bar, Verbier, Switzerland
Not only is this bar great for a dance or two but it has the cool addition of a sliding roof, which is opened when things get a little too hot to bear on the dance floor – which is a great experience when it’s snowing outside and you’re dancing away to a live band.
Trofana Alm, Ischgl, Austria
If you love the idea of a traditional style Austrian bar then Trofana Alm is the ideal destination, should you be staying in the Ischgl resort for your ski holiday. Based in an old wooden barn, you can expect to enjoy rustic décor and a cosy atmosphere, which explains why the bar is packed by 6pm in ski season.
The Cigar Bar, Aspen, USA
If you’re looking for a little old school refinery with your ski holiday then pack your bags and head to the good old U.S of A to experience Aspen and its laid back bar scene. The Cigar Bar is a popular go-to destination, it is a man cave Ron Burgundy wouldn’t hesitate to enter, where you can enjoy a smoke and top shelf liquor with your party.
The Crowded House, Alpe d’Huez, France
If sport is more your thing then Crowded House is the ideal destination. With a bar and sun terrace those who don’t have any interest in the big screen in the bar or plasma screen in the games room can lounge there. There’s also a pool table, football table and pinball as well as live music in the evenings to enjoy.
Schatzi Bar, Ischgl, Austria
If you’re looking for a bar that features live music, an annual festival that features huge stars (Robbie Williams played at last year’s event) and Tylorean dancing girls then the Schatzi Bar is the place for you. Don’t be put off by the thought of the dancing girls though if you are going as a family to the resort, the bar has a welcoming, cosy atmosphere perfect for the old and young alike to enjoy.
Minus 5º ICE BAR, Queenstown, New Zealand
If you’ve visited the Ice Bar in London then you might think you have seen all you needed to when it came to freezing cold drinking holes. But the Minus 5º Ice Bar takes things up a level with 18 tonnes of ice architecture. It’s not a place to relax for the evening but more of an experience, and in the admission cost you also receive a cocktail of your choice.
Popcorn, Saas Fee, Switzerland
If you’re an avid snowboarder and know all the names of the big players in the industry then this bar is the place for you, as many of them hang out there in ski season. It’s also a great bar itself, with a relaxed vibe featuring a jukebox, pool tables and DJ sets.
