Demoo Parkchoonmoo spring/summer 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW
Friday night Demi Park’s spring/summer 2017 collection for Demoo Parkchoonmoo, titled Airiness, was presented at the Gallery at Skylight at Clarkson Square. The bright white loft like setting was perfect for the show’s spare designs.
The inspiration for the show came from Park’s own artwork as well at the shape of a sunbi-a Korean scholar’s coat. Park deftly wove the dual inspirations into a collection that was both multilayered and light. The predominantly linen fabrics caught the air as models walked the runway creating the aura of a cool spring breeze which was quite appealing given the current 90 degree temperatures outside the show as well as a nod to Park’s thoughts on global warming.
The colours, taken from the painting that inspired the show, were a mix of black and cool greys with blue and crisp white adding an ethereal look to an otherwise somber palette. The layering of greys and blacks created a patchwork effect and gave a great deal of depth to the sleek almost minimalist designs.
The shapes of the garments tended to be long and unfussy, even when layered. Volume was used judiciously to create interest without adding unneeded bulk to the design.
Park’s desire to create clothing that is “functional art” is achieved in the outcome of her collection. The pieces looked like they could be worn effortlessly on a hot summer day.
