Although inspired by images of daytime beauty salons of the 70s and 80s, Gabriel Vielma’s SS17 collection celebrated disco glam in the form of metallics, pastels, silver lurex and white metallic jersey sequins on pants and dresses. What was most admirable was Vielma’s ability to celebrate the art of power dressing in a fun and rather playful way through bright, tailored blazers and woven jacquard disco jackets. Even the models seemed mischievous and daring as they stood up from their hair dryers, walked towards the audience, went back towards street poles and glanced back at their onlookers, tilting their heads in a coy manner. Vielma is known for possessing a great eye for colour, for texture and for shape and this did not go amiss this time around; the collection embraced an array of textural techniques which included delicate frills and ruches. Alongside this, his meticulous cutting skills are what set him apart from several other relatively new designers. He creates clothing for independent, vibrant women, doing well in flattering the female form through structure and drape.
