Minki autumn/winter 2017 collection presentation for LFW
An immediate sentiment leaped out at me when I first encountered Minki’s autumn/winter 2017 collection: I longed to be a child again.
Minki managed to do a powerful thing: he embraced a child-like freedom and let it uncontrollably manifest into a riot of powder blue silk dresses, pinstripes and wonderfully awry felt.
Black jumper dresses were animated by magenta, yellow and cyan felt, divided by wiggly lines and brushed until heavily texturised.
Red, navy and white pinstripes were printed onto cotton dresses and paired with white above-the-ankle socks, reminiscent of a twee school uniform.
This gleeful playfulness was emphasised by the models swaying and dancing coyly; rather than being statuesque, they were interactive and tangible, bringing the designs even more to life.
It was as though a little girl dug into her arts and crafts box. The collection inspired nostalgia, memories and images that resonate with the joys of childhood. A strong focus on the unconventional fabrics used brought an element of progressiveness in Minki’s designs; this time, it brought a sweet sentiment of innocent days to life.
