Zio Song’s SS18 collection titled Crossing Veils is inspired by the phrase “Man, in his night, searches for his own light”. This season, the designer’s man has been searching for his emotions, behind horizontal bars and pinstripes, referencing decades where society was even less accepting of male feelings.
Song’s signature design style – the “cross look” – where the designer paints ideas in cross motions on canvas, is then translated onto his fabrics with deliberate attention to detail. This season, the horizontal stripes are painted to express emotions, while the vertical strokes represent the object. An abstract concept.
1920s-style wide-striped two-piece suits had rounded shoulders and shawl lapels, paired with sliders and illustrated T-shirts for a casual look. Jackets with a similar sillouette were smartened up in black and navy, styled with shirts and peg trousers. In rejecting the super slick norms of the business suit, Song has managed to refresh formal wear with a rounder silhouette.
This mixed collection also debuted straight legged leather tassel trousers, sheer tunics and derby-esque footwear. Judging by the T-shirt and suit combinations, Song’s muse might have foregone a mirror check whilst trying to find his feelings. Nevertheless, he has some great pieces in his wardrobe.
